BackTack
At the beginning and end of your stitching, sew forward one or two stitches, then backward and then forward again. This knots the start or end of your stitching.
Clip and Notch Seam Allowances
Cut little slits or Vs into the seam allowance around a curved section. Use slits for curves that go in, Vs on curves that go out. Cutting V’s is called notching. Don’t confuse notching with notches. Notches are those diamonds found along some edges of pattern pieces.
Cut or Trim
Cut along the line or trim wherever it says.
Fuse
Use an iron to stick two fabric or trim layers together with special glue that’s activated by heat or steam. Fusible interfacings, patches and appliqués come with the glue already sprayed on the back. Read the directions from the manufacturer to see how to fuse them correctly.
Match Notches
Line up the diamond shapes on the edge of your fabric pieces. When you see a notch, it usually matches something.
